How to
Sharpen Your Drill Bits
Just about
every one of us has at one time or another
asked, “What do I do with drill bits that need
to be sharpened?”
A common question -
and one that has more than one answer. Here are
four options that you have for drill bits that
are no longer what they need to be.
Sharpen Them Yourself On A Grinder
You may be the type that already has your own
home workshop, and you have a bench grinder
mounted on your workbench. While this is the
traditional way of sharpening drill bits, not
everyone is successful. Special guides can be
purchased at your local home center store that
allows you to get the right angle in order to
sharpen it properly.
Sharpen Them Yourself With A Special Grinder
A number of tool companies have come out with a
device that has a small enclosed grinding wheel
and a place to put your drill bit. It is kind of
like a pencil sharpener, and works in the same
basic way. The drill bit is held at the right
angle and pressed against the grinding wheel.
Many people, say, that the less expensive ones
do not work, so you will want to read some
reviews, and do some comparison-shopping before
you buy.
Have Them Sharpened For You
You may have a neighbor that would just love to
do this for you - for a small fee. Or, some
small tool shop around town may be able to
sharpen them for you. Look in your local phone
book - there is probably someone that can help.
Buy New Ones
This may be your last result - or, your first
one, if you are in a hurry. Drill bit sharpening
tools can be rather costly, and if you do not
use your drill bits all that often, then
remember that a new set of drill bits really is
not all that expensive - and can be easily
obtained.
