Left Hand Drill Bits

Left hand drill bits are usually twist bits and are primarily used in the repetition engineering industry on drilling heads or screw machines.

These left hand bits allow machine operation to carry on when the spindle cannot be reversed or sometimes just for efficiency with the machine. Although the usage of left hand drill bits is less widespread with the augmented use of CNC machines, which are far more versatile. In the olden days, the usage of left hand drill bits was far more regular when machines that are more specialized were used for machining.

Left hand drill bits are also handily used for removing right hand screws. The rotation of left hand drill bits are such that it would loosen the screw, which is particularly useful if the screw head, is damaged. The left hand drill bit would drill into the damaged screw head to help remove the screw.

Another style of left hand drill bits are used as an extraction tool. These left hand drill bits are commonly used to extract broken or seized screws using a method other than drilling. These extraction tools have a conical thread structure, which is inserted, into a recommended-sized drill hole into the damaged screw. If a regular left hand drill bit does not remove the damaged screw then this type of extraction tool removes it. The extraction tool rotates and the action of the conical screw and spiral tunnels into the damaged screw head causing the drill bit to lock tightly into the material and if it can apply enough pressure, can remove the damaged screw.

There are many uses for left hand drill bits even though new technology and more versatile machining tools have been introduced. They are still handy for the home handyman to use in his workshop. While the left hand drill bits have become a little more obsolete in the machining industry, your home handyman could indeed utilize a few left hand drill bits in his drill bit collection.
